"Ish" as Mrs. Figueroa's Fave

"Ish" by Peter R. Reynolds

This book is about a boy names Ramon who loves to draw. He draws all the time and one day his brother comes in and sees his drawings. His brother says something to him and then Ramon becomes sad. His sister comes up with a plan to make him happy again.
I recommend this book because it makes me feel happy inside because it's always ok to be just who we are and none of us have to be perfect.

"The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs" as Mrs. Mitchell's Fave

"The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs" by Jon Scieska

Who's says there's only one side to a story? Of course not, there is ALWAYS two sides, a different perspective. This hysterical book is all about the poor, poor wolf and his explanation how things happened through his lenses!

This book is about the Amazon rain forest and all of the creatures who depend on it as a life source. Each animal will walk up to the young man and try to convince him not chop down the large tree. "The Great Brain" as Mr. Barrow's Fave

"The Great Brain" by John D. Fitzgerald

I read this series of books when I was an elementary school student. I remember laughing at all the shenanigans of the middle brother ("The Great Brain"), connecting with the way the younger brother looked up to his older brothers, and feeling like the author totally understood what it was like to have lots of siblings. I recommend this book to anyone who has brothers and sisters. (I also recommend this book to anyone who is looking for ways to make a few dollars off of your friends, but maybe we shouldn't tell your teachers that.... ;)

"Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" as Mrs. Price's Fave

"Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst

Alexander is the star of this book and it is clear that he feels like his day is going very badly. The book chronicles Alexander complaining about everything that isn't going his way. He doesn't get the window seat in carpool, makes a mistake in class, the dentist finds a cavity, he gets in an argument with is brother, and he even has to wear his least favorite pajamas. Alexander's attitude is even worse than his terrible day. He doesn't take responsibility for his feelings and thinks the only solution to his problems is to move to Australia.

We all have bad days sometimes and bad things happen that are out of our control. Alexander's mother reminds him that bad days even happen in Australia. I had the privilege of living in Australia for 3 years and traveling other places in the world. I know first hand that good and bad days happen wherever you are, but the one thing that you can control is your attitude and how you respond no matter what may happen in a day.

This book reminds me to practice habit 1: Be proactive. I can choose my own attitude and behaviors even when I don't FEEL happy I can choose to BE happy and joyful and still look for the positive and good things in life. This is what it means to choose your own weather. It can make even the worst days a little bit better and could even turn a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad day into a wonderful, marvelous, great, very good day!
