The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is about a boy who discovers he is the son of Posiden, the Sea God. He also finds out there are many "half-breeds" who live among humans and there is a special school for those half-human/half-god children. There are also those who would destroy these half-breed children. In the first book, Percy has to find out who has stolen Zeus' lightning bolt. He has a lot of adventures and makes many friends (and enemies) along the way.
I would recommend this book because it goes pretty deep into the history of the Greek gods and Mythology. It gives a good base for studying these myths and helps the characters to come alive and become likeable, or fearful. The characters are very real and the adventures are exciting.
